  1. Moldova at a Glance

Moldova is a compact destination between Romania and Ukraine, with rolling countryside,

vineyards, cellar tours, monasteries and a surprisingly strong food-and-wine culture. It works well

as a 3- to 5-day trip, while 7 days allows slower rural travel.

Key idea

Book winery visits ahead where possible; many cellar experiences are guided tours

rather than walk-in tastings.

  1. Where to Go

Chișinău

Use the capital as your base for museums, parks, cafés, markets and day trips. Central highlights

include the Cathedral area, Central Market, Stephen the Great Park, the National Museum complex

and the city’s boulevard-and-park core.

Wine Country

Moldova is especially known for large underground wine complexes and modern wine resorts.

Cricova and Mileștii Mici are the famous cellar experiences; Castel Mimi, Château Purcari, Asconi

and Chateau Vartely offer different styles of winery visits and hospitality.

Orheiul Vechi

A dramatic cultural-natural landscape of limestone cliffs, river valleys, cave monasteries and

village scenery. It is one of the best day trips from Chișinău and deserves more time than a quick

photo stop.

Soroca

The Dniester-side city is best known for Soroca Fortress and its river setting. It fits travelers

interested in medieval history and northern Moldova.

Monasteries and countryside

Consider Căpriana, Curchi, Saharna or Țipova for architecture, woodland scenery and quieter

travel. Rural guesthouses can turn a standard sightseeing trip into an overnight cultural

experience.

Gagauzia and the south

Comrat and nearby villages offer a different cultural perspective, with Gagauz traditions, wine,

food and southern landscapes. This is better as an add-on for travelers with 5-7 days.

  1. Chișinău Guide

What to see

  • Cathedral Park and the Nativity Cathedral area for an easy first walk.
  • Stephen the Great Park and the surrounding central streets for people-watching and green space.
  • Central Market for everyday food, produce and local atmosphere.
  • National Museum of History of Moldova and the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural

History for context.

  • Valea Morilor and nearby parks for a more relaxed afternoon.

Food in Chișinău

  • Plăcinte – filled pastries that work for breakfast or a snack.
  • Mămăligă – cornmeal served with cheese, cream or meat dishes.
  • Zeamă – a traditional chicken soup, often with herbs and homemade noodles.
  • Sarmale – cabbage or vine-leaf rolls with a savory filling.
  • Brânză / local cheeses and seasonal vegetables are common accompaniments.Moldova Regional Travel Guide 2026 – YEMART LLC

  1. Wine Travel

Moldova is one of Europe’s most distinctive wine destinations. The experience is often as much

about the underground cellars, food pairing and hospitality as the bottle itself.

Wine stop

Why visit

Cricova

Large underground cellars, guided tours and tasting programs

Mileștii Mici

Huge underground network and a classic Moldovan wine experience

Castel Mimi

Wine-resort style setting, dining and events

Château Purcari

Premium-wine identity and a more destination-style estate experience

Chateau Vartely / Asconi

Accessible winery experiences with food, tasting and countryside appeal

Booking tip: winery schedules, tasting menus and transport options change by season. Confirm

the visit directly with the winery before traveling, especially on weekends and public holidays.

Wine etiquette

  • Taste slowly rather than treating a cellar visit as a fast bar stop.
  • Eat before or alongside multiple tastings and hydrate between pours.
  • For self-drive trips, use a designated driver or pre-arranged transfer.
  • Ask whether the tasting includes cellar access, food pairing and transportation before paying.
  1. Orheiul Vechi & Rural Moldova

Orheiul Vechi is the country’s signature landscape: exposed limestone, the Răut River, historic

settlements and monastic sites. Plan a half day at minimum; a full day is better.

Suggested day

  • Morning: leave Chișinău early and arrive before the strongest midday heat in summer.
  • Late morning: walk the main viewpoints and cultural sites around Butuceni.
  • Lunch: choose a local or guesthouse-style meal where available.
  • Afternoon: add a monastery/cave site and a village walk.
  • Return to Chișinău before late evening if using a private transfer.

Other rural experiences

  • Căpriana and Curchi monasteries for architecture and peaceful surroundings.
  • Saharna and Țipova for dramatic river-valley scenery and monastery sites.Moldova Regional Travel Guide 2026 – YEMART LLC

  • Văleni and the Lower Prut area for village-based experiences and southern landscapes.

  1. Getting Around

Arriving

Chișinău International Airport is the main gateway. From the airport, use an official

taxi/ride-hailing option, pre-arranged transfer, or another clearly identified transport provider.

Within Chișinău

  • Walking works well in the compact central sightseeing area.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing are practical for short trips across the city.
  • Public transport is inexpensive, but routes can be less intuitive for first-time visitors.

Regional travel

  • Private driver / hired car: easiest for wineries, monasteries and Orheiul Vechi in one day.
  • Intercity bus / minibus: useful for budget travel, but schedules and comfort vary.
  • Train: limited compared with many Western European destinations; verify current schedules

before planning around rail.

Road-trip advice

  • Avoid driving after wine tastings.
  • Allow more time than map estimates on secondary rural roads.
  • Keep identification and driving documents accessible.
  • Do not assume rural areas have card payment or reliable mobile signal.

  1. Safety & Entry Notes for 2026

Current advisory: The U.S. Department of State lists Moldova at Level 2 – Exercise Increased

Caution as of July 7, 2026, citing unrest and other risks, including unexploded-ordnance risk in

some areas. It advises reconsidering travel to Transnistria because of the risk of armed conflict.

For practical trip planning, treat Transnistria as a separate high-risk decision rather than a routine

add-on. Monitor official advisories before departure and during the trip.

Entry: Visa rules depend on nationality. Check Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa-regime

page for your passport before booking. The U.S. advisory currently states that U.S. tourists do not

need a visa for stays of 90 days or less in any 180-day period, but other nationalities can differ.

Money: The Moldovan leu (MDL) is the official currency. Cards are widely accepted in urban areas,

while cash is more important in rural areas and local markets. Carry a backup payment method

and some local cash.

Documents: Carry identification. Keep copies of key travel documents separately. For road trips,

carry the documents required for the driver and vehicle.

  1. Local Etiquette & Practical Tips

  • Dress modestly when visiting monasteries and religious sites.
  • Ask before photographing people in intimate village or religious settings.
  • Do not assume every rural venue accepts cards.
  • Book winery tours in advance rather than arriving without notice.Moldova Regional Travel Guide 2026 – YEMART LLC

mandatory.
